But, boy is it ever free-to-play. It plays video ads after every round and constantly reminds you that youre running out of in-game cash for various upgrades, would you like to buy a pack of funbux only 1.99?

At some point you wont be able to progress any farther without buying stars for real money (about $200M revenue targets, or map 7), and thats when it stops being fun.
